Job Search Tips and Tactics

The job search can be both exciting and overwhelming. It's essential to focus your search on what you want for your career in the short and long term, where you want to go, and who can help you get there.

These simple tips can help you find your dream job:

Search Online

It's easy to search for jobs online; however, to maximize your success, focus on reliable sources in the setting or profession where you want to work. Many sites have job postings from across the web, but not all of them are current or are tailored to your professional goals. You can avoid the hassle of sorting through positions that don't fit your background or career goals by using sources like ASHA's job board or state associations.

Read the Careers Section

Job postings are often included in online and print publications, from e-newsletters to journals to magazines. In The ASHA Leader, the Careers section contains national job listings and academic positions.

Network, Network, Network

Networking—in person and online—is one of the most effective ways to find new opportunities. There are many different ways to network, such as:

  • Talking to colleagues, mentors, and friends about your career plans so they can help you find positions and act as references when you apply.
  • Attending in-person or virtual events like the ASHA Virtual Career Fairs, where employers seek to hire audiologists, speech-language pathologists, clinical fellows, and assistants. At in-person and virtual career fairs, you have the opportunity to ask questions, collect information, compare employers, and conduct interviews.
  • Using your social media network to find and reach out to contacts at the organizations that interest you.

Let Employers Find You

Let employers do the heavy lifting and find you by posting your resume on ASHA's job board and by changing your status on LinkedIn to "open to opportunities." This strategy allows you to see who may be interested in you and give you an advantage in negotiating a job offer.
